WNMU Information and Registration System!
What is a “Hold,” what does it mean and how to resolve it!
Typically, a “Hold” prohibits you from attempting to access a function or process within WNMU Information and Registration System, such as registering for a course. There are many “holds” that inhibit the registration process as well as other processes at the University – such as an “Instructor’s Hold” on a particular class that you wish to register for.
Below are a number of holds that impede the Registration process. Each hold is listed along with a description of the hold, why it is present and what office should be contacted to help you with it.
Admissions Hold - Admissions Office – Juan Chacon Building
A student having an Admissions Hold will not be allowed to register. The hold is placed on a student who has yet to satisfy all admissions requirements: (i.e. official transcripts or test scores).
Please contact the Admissions Office, 538-6000 or email at: Admissions@WNMU.edu
A student having any one or a combination of the aforementioned holds will not be allowed to register until the following conditions are met:
Complete the Compass Placement Exam (administered at the Juan Chacon Building on the Campus of WNNU); OR
Submit achievement of an ACT sub-score of 21 or better (or SAT equivalent of 500) in Mathematics, English and Social Science. The ACT/SAT must have been within the past five years; OR
Complete the Compass Placement Exam in corresponding areas where the ACT/SAT Sub-score was less than 21/500; OR
Submit transcript(s) showing the completion of a college-level Writing and/or a Mathematics Course earning a grade of “C” or better.
Once the above items have been received, the hold will be lifted.
Please contact the Admissions Office, 538-6000 or email at: Admissions@WNMU.edu for questions regarding the above or to learn of the next available test date for the Compass Placement Exam.
A student having a “Graduate Provisional” is required to meet the following conditions:
The student is required to take the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) and, complete 9 hours of Graduate studies at WNMU with a B or 3.0 (or better) GPA for those 9 hours.
The “hold” will be then lifted from the student’s record through the Office of Academic Affairs.
For questions, please contact the Office of Academic Affairs at 538-6317 or email: Linda.Hoy@WNMU.edu
A student having a “Declaration of Major” hold has yet to declare their choice of major.
The student, having accumulated 48 credits, must formally declare their major. In order to do so, the student must go to the Center for Student Success and fill out the Declaration of Major form. The form along with the student’s file is forwarded to the Academic Department of their choice.
The “hold” will be then lifted from the student’s record.
For questions, please contact the Center for Student Success at 538-6400.
A student having a “Stafford Loan” hold is either delinquent or has defaulted on a Stafford Student Loan. To resolve this issue and remove the hold from the student’s record; A. Contact the Lender to make payment arrangements and B. Contact the Financial Aid Office at WNMU and provide a letter from the Lender stating that the student’s loan is no longer in default.
The Perkins Loan Hold is placed on a student’s record when the student defaults on a Perkins Student Loan borrowed at WNMU. Resolving this hold: A. Contact the Financial Aid Office at WNMU to make payment arrangements. (Note: Only two payment options are available: Pay the Loan in full or Sign a Repayment Agreement and pay 12 consecutive monthly payments.)
For questions on either hold, please contact the Financial Aid Office at 538-6173 or email: FinAid@WNMU.edu
The Housing Hold is placed on a student’s record for one or more of the following reasons:
1. Unpaid Housing Fines;
2. Students who meet the mandatory requirement that they live on campus their first semester at WNMU and they do not;
3. Fall Semester Checkout: Students who sign a contract for the full Academic Year and checkout at the close of the Fall Semester will receive this hold when they register for Spring Classes. The student is bound by their contract.
Contact the Housing Office to find out which of the above applies and to resolve it. The Housing Office’s telephone number is 538-6629 or email at: Housing@WNMU.edu
Bookstore Hold - Bookstore – Student Memorial Center
The Bookstore Hold can be placed on a student’s record for various financial reasons. To resolve this hold, the student must go to the Bookstore. Call ahead for an appointment at 538-6123.
Library Holds are placed on a student’s record when the student has checked out a book and does not return it after being sent 2 overdue notices. Note that when a book is more than 45 days overdue, the Library’s computing system automatically changes the status of the book to “lost.”
There are two ways a student can resolve this hold:
1. Return the overdue book
2. Pay for the book – if it has been lost.
For more information on Library Holds, contact Miller Library at 538-6350 or email to:Library@WNMU.edu
